Schroeder's ties to Russia have drawn criticism, especially following the Ukraine invasion. Merz's spokesperson emphasized Putin's responsibility for the war's suffering. The visit also faced backlash from within Schroeder's own party, the SPD, with co-leader Lars Klingbeil deeming it unacceptable. Schroeder has held various high-ranking positions in Russian companies since leaving office, including roles in Nord Stream and Rosneft. Recently, he joined the supervisory board of Russian retailer Hyperglobus.
