Mastercard plans to enable offline payments in Romania starting February 2027, allowing cardholders to make transactions without internet connectivity. New cards issued in Europe will support this feature, and by May 2027, all new payment terminals must accommodate offline transactions. This initiative aims to enhance payment resilience during connectivity issues, enabling purchases at essential retailers even during outages. The technology will allow transactions up to 200 euros to be approved locally, with later online settlement. Mastercard emphasizes the importance of maintaining access to payments in emergencies, drawing on successful implementations in other European countries.
