Mastercard plans to introduce offline payments in Romania by 2027, allowing transactions during power outages or network failures. This initiative follows a major blackout in 2025 that affected millions in Spain and Portugal. From February 2027, all new Mastercard cards in Europe will support offline payments, and by May 2027, all new payment terminals must also accommodate this feature. The technology enables secure spending limits to be stored on the card chip, allowing transactions up to 200 euros without online authorization. This move aims to enhance the resilience of payment infrastructure and ensure consumers can make essential purchases even during connectivity issues.
