Electric vehicles accounted for a record share of new car registrations in the EU last year, driven by rising fuel prices and cheaper models. In 2022, 17.3% of new cars were battery electric, while hybrids made up 42.4%. The share of fully electric vehicles has surged from 0.4% in 2015, aided by improved infrastructure and affordability. Denmark, the Netherlands, and Malta had the highest shares of electric vehicles, while Croatia, Slovakia, and Bulgaria had the lowest. The positive trend is expected to continue, with a 40.5% increase in electric vehicle registrations in the first half of 2023, while gasoline and diesel car sales declined significantly. The share of fully electric vehicles rose to 20.7% in early 2023, up from 15.6% a year earlier, with growth anticipated in Germany, France, and Denmark.
