Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Vodafone, and Telefónica are in preliminary talks to form a consortium for a future auction of satellite communication spectrum. This initiative aims to create a European alternative to Starlink's direct-to-mobile services, enhancing the EU's autonomy in space infrastructure. The companies are considering bidding for a portion of the 2 GHz spectrum, which is set to be reserved for European operators. The EU plans to allocate one-third of the spectrum to European companies, another third to sovereign communication services under the IRIS² satellite constellation, and the remaining third for international firms. The proposed rules aim to reduce reliance on non-EU providers for satellite communication infrastructure.
