Samuel Niederhauser from Switzerland won the First Prize in the Cello Section of the George Enescu International Competition 2026, held at the Romanian Athenaeum. He impressed the jury and audience, receiving three awards, including the Audience Prize and a special award for the best interpretation of a required piece. Niederhauser performed on a 1690 Carlo Giuseppe Testore cello, which he borrowed. The competition attracted a record 819 entries from 58 countries, showcasing young talent in classical music. The event runs from August 23 to September 19, 2026, with further sections for violin and piano.
