The UK has proposed a nuclear deterrent mechanism for Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) member states, enhancing security outside NATO's formal procedures. This initiative, announced by Admiral Gwyn Jenkins during his visit to Finland, aims to extend the UK's nuclear umbrella to ten countries, including Finland, Sweden, and Norway. The agreement is expected to be signed at the upcoming Oslo summit in November. The UK's nuclear submarines will provide this protection, and the mechanism does not require NATO's Article 5 activation. Finland has previously joined a French-led nuclear deterrence initiative, highlighting the importance of JEF amid current security challenges.
