U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a request for $45 million in additional funds to support Ecuador's security efforts against drug trafficking and criminal organizations during his visit to the country. This funding aims to bolster the government of President Daniel Noboa in combating drug-related crime. Rubio designated the Ecuadorian group Los Tiguerones as a foreign terrorist organization, allowing for further U.S. actions against it. Additionally, sanctions will be imposed on seven former Ecuadorian officials for corruption. The U.S. will also provide maritime equipment, including a Coast Guard patrol boat and interception vessels, to aid in drug trafficking operations. Further funding is planned for initiatives against illegal gold exploitation and criminal recruitment.
