A new malware named RemControl is spreading in Europe, targeting banking data through a fake TV viewing app. Discovered by Group-IB, it has been active since at least May, with samples appearing in July. The malware employs over 30 phishing layers and is partially created using artificial intelligence. It is distributed via counterfeit pages on the Play Store, which evade Meta's advertising filters. Once installed, it activates a VPN service to bypass Google Play Protect, allowing it to monitor user input and potentially grant remote access to attackers. The malware's origin is suspected to be Russian due to found text in HTML files. Users are advised to download apps only from official sources and check reviews.
