Shopping malls are popular leisure spots for Romanians, but they can also trigger compulsive behaviors. Psychiatrist Octavian Vasiliu discusses "mall disorders," which include compulsive buying, kleptomania, and pathological gambling. Compulsive buying affects about 8.7% of mall visitors, often seen in young women with low self-esteem. Kleptomania, more common in women, involves stealing items without real value, typically starting in adolescence. Pathological gambling affects 0.2% to 5.3% of adults, exacerbated by the presence of gambling facilities in malls. Compulsive eating is also a concern, with episodes of excessive food consumption linked to emotional difficulties. Treatment may involve medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy, with a focus on long-term monitoring to prevent relapse.
