The Parliament of Papua New Guinea is reviewing the Bougainville referendum results, where 97.7% voted for independence. Although the vote was not legally binding, it could lead to Bougainville becoming a new nation. The region, with around 370,000 residents, has been negotiating its status for years. A parliamentary vote is required to ratify the results, with discussions starting soon. Bougainville aims for extended autonomy by 2027 and full independence by 2030, stemming from long-standing grievances over resource revenues and a civil war. If approved, Bougainville could emerge as a new country.
