Recent dredging and regulation works on the Danube near Cernavodă were proposed 23 years ago due to low water levels affecting nuclear energy production. The energy sector had warned about the need for these measures after the first nuclear reactor was shut down in 2003. Currently, Romania is in an energy alert state following the shutdown of the Cernavodă reactor due to extremely low Danube levels, which have also impacted hydroelectric production. The government has approved emergency measures to ensure sufficient cooling water for the nuclear plant, including dredging and water release from reservoirs. Nuclearelectrica assures there are no operational risks despite the shutdowns.
