Recent dredging and regulation works on the Danube near the Bala arm were proposed 23 years ago by energy officials after the first nuclear unit at Cernavodă was shut down. The current energy alert in Romania follows the shutdown of the first reactor due to low water levels in the Danube, which also affected hydroelectric production. The government has approved emergency measures to ensure sufficient cooling water for the nuclear plant, including dredging and water release from the Olt River. Nuclearelectrica assures there are no operational risks despite the shutdowns.
