The U.S. troop withdrawal is set to be completed by September 30, following the end of the combat mission against ISIS in 2021. The Kurdish region has faced numerous missile and drone attacks, particularly from Iran, which views it as a Western ally. The semi-autonomous Kurdish region was established post-Saddam Hussein's fall in 2003, and relations with Baghdad remain contentious.
