Romania has enacted Law no. 190/2026, allowing the hunting of 969 brown bears, with strict regulations for hunters. Of these, 859 bears are designated for preventive measures, while 110 are for emergency interventions. The law, effective from October 8, 2026, aims to manage human-wildlife conflicts, particularly in regions with frequent bear sightings. Key restrictions include the protection of female bears with cubs and prohibiting hunting in protected areas. Additionally, the law prevents the selective hunting of large trophy bears. Starting in 2028, bear hunting quotas will be determined annually based on scientific studies of the bear population in Romania.
