The French judiciary has annulled the victory of the far-right party Rassemblement National in the Montargis local elections due to defamatory video content. The Administrative Court of Orléans cited the broadcast of a damaging video shortly before the second round of voting as the basis for its decision. The RN candidate won the election with a narrow margin, defeating the left alliance candidate by just 59 votes. The left alliance contested the election results, claiming the video influenced voters unfairly. The court found that the accused candidate did not have a chance to respond to the allegations before the vote, which could have affected the outcome. The RN's lawyer argued that the video's impact on voting was unquantifiable and that annulment could set a dangerous precedent. The RN's victory ended a 25-year period of right-wing leadership in the city. The decision can be appealed to the Council of State, and if upheld, new elections will be held within three months.
