Iceland's government plans to introduce a bill in February to permanently ban whaling, leaving Norway and Japan as the only countries still engaged in commercial whaling. The decision follows years of protests from animal rights organizations and celebrities. The bill aims to protect vulnerable species, particularly fin whales, which have faced significant hunting pressure. In the current hunting season, 80 fin whales have been captured, with a quota allowing for 150. Iceland's interim government has issued a five-year license to the only whaling company in the country. Historically, only Iceland, Norway, and Japan have continued commercial whaling, with Japan having withdrawn from the International Whaling Commission in 2019.
