Isărescu, despre trecerea României la euro: „Nu avem niciun criteriu îndeplinit”

Mugur Isărescu, the governor of the National Bank of Romania, stated that while the BNR is ready to resume preparations for adopting the euro, Romania currently does not meet any convergence criteria. He emphasized the need to reduce the budget deficit below 3% and maintain fiscal discipline before considering euro adoption. Isărescu recalled past efforts to prepare for the euro, highlighting that Romania had met the criteria in 2014 but has since faced challenges, including tax cuts and increased spending. He noted that the transition to the euro is a complex political process requiring broad societal support. Currently, no criteria are fulfilled, and the priority remains fiscal correction.
