A revolutionary reactor converts plastic waste into hydrogen gas with 90% purity, using a process called alkaline thermal treatment. This method is carbon-neutral, effectively trapping carbon in solid materials. The reactor can process mixed plastics like PET, PE, and PP without extensive sorting, reducing recycling costs. Researchers from UCLA and Ewha Womans University adapted an existing biomass process for plastics, achieving hydrogen production at lower temperatures. The process also captures carbon, transforming it into stable carbonates, thus minimizing atmospheric emissions. While promising, further studies are needed to assess economic viability outside the lab.
