The Island of the Pheasants will officially return to French sovereignty on August 1, 2026, following a unique six-month administrative tradition. Each year, the island alternates administration between Spain and France, with Madrid managing it from February 1 to July 31, and Paris from August 1 to January 31. This small, uninhabited island has historical significance in Franco-Spanish relations, hosting official ceremonies during each administrative change. The island, located on the Bidasoa River, is only about 2,000 m² in size and has no roads or settlements.
