An ANAF inspector from Timișoara is under investigation by DNA for allegedly accepting a bribe of 1.5 million euros to facilitate an illegal VAT refund. The inspector, Ion-Dacian Crainic, is accused of promising to influence colleagues to approve a VAT refund of approximately 21 million lei for a business represented by a businessman. The investigation includes charges of influence trafficking and complicity. Crainic reportedly planned to keep a portion of the bribe for himself and distribute the rest to public officials. Additional bribes were also discussed for further assistance in VAT-related matters.
