INS: Populația României a scăzut la 19 milioane de persoane și continuă să îmbătrânească

As of January 1, 2026, Romania's resident population is 19.041 million, showing a slight decline due to negative natural growth. Despite a positive international migration balance, the natural decrease of 104,100 people was not offset. The urban population increased slightly, while the elderly demographic continues to rise, now comprising 20.5% of the total population. The youth population share decreased, and the aging index has increased, indicating a growing demographic challenge. The dependency ratio has slightly improved, reflecting demographic shifts. These figures are provisional and will be revised in December 2026.
