The heart's intrinsic nervous system consists of neurons that communicate with each other and the brain, influencing cardiac function. Two distinct types of cardiac neurons were identified: Npy+, which slows the heart rate, and Ddah1+, which enhances survival under stress. The study suggests a complex relationship between the heart and brain, indicating that cardiac neurons actively protect the heart. Similar genetic markers were found in human cardiac neurons, hinting at potential human applications.
