Local and county councilors in Romania face a choice between their elected positions and public employment due to new incompatibility laws. Starting August 26, 2026, the amended Article 550 of the Administrative Code enforces incompatibility rules for public officials, affecting both councilors and contractual staff in public institutions. Those affected must suspend their employment contracts to comply, with exceptions for teachers and researchers. The National Integrity Agency may intervene if individuals do not act accordingly. A notification to employers is required by August 25, 2026, to avoid disciplinary actions.
