In 2025, the area of Brazilian Amazon rainforest affected by fires reached its lowest level in 40 years, according to MapBiomas. Approximately 3.1 million hectares burned, a significant decrease from 2024. Nationwide, Brazil saw a reduction in vegetation fires, with 12.7 million hectares affected, the lowest since 2018. The report noted an increase in water-covered land in the Amazon due to heavy rainfall after two years of drought. Despite these positive trends, researcher Bruno Ferreira warned about the long-term impact of climate change and extreme weather events. Over 49% of burned areas were on private rural land, highlighting land use issues.
