The first zoo in Romania was established in 1584 by Petru Cercel in Târgoviște as a sanctuary for wild animals. This early form of a zoo was exclusive to the nobility and showcased wealth and European trends. However, the first modern zoo, adhering to contemporary standards, opened in 1929 in Sibiu, initiated by engineer Szekely. The Sibiu Zoo has since expanded to over 20 hectares and received various animal donations. Many Romanian zoos were founded during the communist era, including the Bucharest Zoo in 1955. Currently, Romania has 25 operational zoos.
