A collection of 2,584 silver coins from the Norman period, discovered in Somerset, has been acquired for the national heritage at a value of £4.3 million, marking the most valuable treasure find in British history. The coins, known as the Chew Valley Hoard, were obtained by South West Heritage Trust after five years of official procedures under the Treasure Act 1996. The acquisition was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and local charities. Dating from 1066-1068, the coins provide rare physical evidence of the political turmoil following the Battle of Hastings. The discovery occurred on January 26, 2019, when a group of metal detector enthusiasts found the coins in a muddy field. The collection will be exhibited at the British Museum and later at the Museum of Somerset, ensuring public access to this significant historical artifact.
