The UNCTAD warns that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could push small and medium enterprises (SMEs) out of global supply chains, weakening international trade resilience. Rising energy costs, transportation expenses, and financing difficulties, exacerbated by the US-Iran conflict, disproportionately affect SMEs compared to larger corporations. SMEs, which constitute about 90% of global companies and provide 70% of jobs, may face significant economic impacts from maritime trade disruptions. Recent conflicts have already led to increased oil prices and reduced shipping volumes, further straining SMEs' operational costs. UNCTAD highlights the risk of SMEs being excluded from value chains, even as international trade recovers.
