Harta lumii se schimbă după aproape 500 de ani. ONU a votat pentru renunțarea la proiecția Mercator

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution advocating for the gradual phase-out of the Mercator projection in favor of more accurate maps. This change could influence how future generations perceive world maps in schools and digital devices. The resolution, supported by 164 countries, was driven by Togo on behalf of the African Union, while the US was the only nation to vote against it. The document promotes the use of projections like Equal Earth, which better represent land areas. The Mercator projection, introduced in 1569, distorts sizes, particularly at high latitudes, leading to misconceptions about the relative sizes of continents. Togo plans to hold a meeting with UNESCO and other organizations to discuss implementation of the resolution's principles.
