The data from the European Commission's ERCC highlights a challenging fire season, particularly affecting southern and western Europe. The Iberian Peninsula, southern France, Italy, and Greece have seen extensive damage, prompting several countries to request international assistance. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism activated 12 responses for wildfires in 2026, deploying 777 firefighters from 14 nations. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service played a crucial role in monitoring and mapping affected areas, producing 588 maps to aid response efforts. Overall, the report indicates that the area burned this year has already surpassed the average of the last two decades.
