This decision aims to boost the ruling coalition's popularity ahead of next year's elections, as they currently lag behind the opposition in polls. The tax relief will apply to motorcycles and over 70% of small to medium cars with a power of up to 80 kW, but only for one vehicle per citizen. Critics argue this measure distracts from rising fuel prices, which have been increasing due to global supply issues. The government faces challenges in funding this initiative amid a high public debt projected to reach nearly 139% of GDP this year.
