As of July 2026, Romania's public debt reached approximately 1.205 trillion lei, accounting for 60.4% of GDP. The government accumulated 67.7 billion lei in debt during 2026 alone. The majority of this debt consists of government bonds valued at 961.41 billion lei, with loans totaling 219.4 billion lei. The internal public debt rose to 607.38 billion lei, while external debt decreased to 597.6 billion lei. Romania's fiscal plan aims to reduce the budget deficit below 3% of GDP and stabilize debt around the 60% threshold by 2030-2031.
