European payment groups, including Bizum, Bancomat, and Wero, have announced a collaboration to create a joint company overseeing cross-border payments. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on American firms like Visa and Mastercard, which currently dominate card payments in the EU. The new European Payment Network (EPN) will be based in Madrid and will establish a common interoperability center to connect existing payment systems. Founders of the EPN include several major payment providers, collectively serving around 10 million customers across 13 European countries. Additional payment groups may join in the future.
