Greece, along with Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Austria, has launched a joint project to establish migrant return centers for those denied residency in the EU. The initiative aims to be operational by mid-2027, with plans to send rejected asylum seekers to third countries like Rwanda. Greek Migration Minister Thanos Plevris emphasized that the project focuses on designating return countries rather than creating detention centers. This move is part of a broader effort to address the ongoing migration crisis in Europe, which has seen a rise in populist-nationalist parties. The plan is supported by new EU legislative changes allowing the transfer of rejected migrants to third countries.
