The Greek President Konstantinos Tassoulas urged Turkey to officially recognize the Pontic Genocide, emphasizing the need to acknowledge ethnic cleansing in modern society. During a religious ceremony, he highlighted the resilience of the Pontic Greek community despite historical tragedies. Tassoulas stressed Greece's moral duty to raise awareness of the suffering of Pontic Greeks and called for global recognition of the genocide, including by Turkey. The Pontic Genocide involved the ethnic cleansing of Christian Greeks in the Pontus region from 1914 to 1923, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths. While Greece officially recognized the genocide in 1994, Turkey denies its occurrence, attributing the deaths to interethnic conflicts and other factors.
