Germany will launch a digital wallet on January 2, 2027, allowing citizens to store personal data on a virtual ID card. The app "d-you" will facilitate online identification with authorities and contractual partners. Additional identity proofs, like driving licenses, will be integrated into the digital ID. The initiative aligns with EU legislation requiring member states to provide digital ID applications for smartphones, aiming to reduce bureaucracy. Individuals over 70 can use the ID indefinitely, and passport holders will not need to visit local offices for address updates, as old addresses will remain valid.
