The German Defense Ministry acknowledged isolated cases of Ukrainian soldiers deserting during training in Germany, following reports of hundreds of such incidents. The Bundeswehr stated it does not identify deserters, as this is an internal matter for the Ukrainian armed forces. By early 2026, around 87,000 Ukrainian soldiers are expected to be trained in 22 European partner countries, with Germany having trained approximately 29,000 so far.
