Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group will acquire a 30% stake in Nio Inc.'s battery-swapping division, valued at approximately $2.4 billion. This strategic move allows Geely access to Nio's extensive battery-swapping network. Geely will contribute its own battery-swapping division and pay 640 million yuan in cash. The partnership provides Nio with crucial funding and optimizes its infrastructure usage, while Geely avoids the costs of building a competing network. The deal validates Nio Power's market value at 16 billion yuan, representing a significant portion of Nio's total market capitalization. However, the long-term sustainability of battery-swapping faces competition from alternative technologies, as electric vehicle manufacturers shift towards ultra-fast charging solutions. Nio's sales have increased by 58% this year, but the company has returned to losses amid a slowing growth rate and macroeconomic pressures in the Chinese auto market.
