European consumers may start receiving natural gas from an offshore field near Cyprus by March 2028, as announced by the Cypriot energy minister. The eastern Mediterranean is becoming an alternative energy source for Europe amid geopolitical tensions. TotalEnergies and Eni have decided to develop the Cronos gas field, marking the first delivery from this region to European markets. A pipeline connecting Cronos to Egypt's Zohr field will begin construction this year, with an estimated cost of $2 billion. While most gas will be exported to Europe, a small portion may be used for Egypt's domestic needs. Additionally, Cyprus is exploring further gas fields and energy interconnections with Israel.
