In 2025, the ozone hole was among the smallest in decades, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The latest report indicates that both the depth and extent of the ozone hole were significantly below the 1990-2010 average for the second consecutive year. This reduction is attributed to natural atmospheric phenomena and the decline of ozone-depleting substances like CFCs. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo noted that the ozone layer has been recovering since 2000, with a complete recovery expected in a few decades. The Montreal Protocol has successfully phased out over 99% of regulated ozone-depleting substances. Increased UV radiation due to a thinner ozone layer poses health risks, including skin cancer. Effective UV protection measures are crucial, especially as UV radiation has risen by up to 20% in parts of Europe since the mid-1990s. World Ozone Day is observed annually on September 16.
