A recent archaeological study revealed that the ancient palace of Grat Be’al Gibri in Ethiopia, dating back 2,800 years, could theoretically support a load equivalent to a 19-story building. This finding highlights the advanced construction techniques used in the region during ancient times. The study, conducted by the German Archaeological Institute and Brandenburg University of Technology, utilized modern engineering methods to analyze the palace's structural integrity. Although the palace was destroyed by fire, the remaining foundation and walls demonstrated significant load-bearing capacity. This research provides new insights into the architectural traditions of East Africa, indicating a sophisticated understanding of material strength and weight distribution long before the medieval period.
