At the foot of South Mountain in Phoenix, an unusual house known as Mystery Castle was built from discarded materials by Boyce Luther Gulley between 1934 and 1945. This 18-room structure, created for his daughter Mary Lou, showcases a unique architectural style influenced by folk art and recycling. Despite lacking formal architectural training, Gulley constructed the castle manually, incorporating various salvaged items, including stones, bricks, and railway components. After Mary Lou inherited the property, it gained national attention, leading to tours and public interest. However, the castle faced challenges, including vandalism and costly renovations, resulting in its closure in 2023. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has recognized it as one of the most endangered historic sites in the U.S.
