Marin Lungu, a 90-year-old retired major general and notable figure in the Romanian Army, has passed away. He was the youngest soldier during World War II, becoming a corporal at just 9 years old. Born in Neatârnarea, Tulcea, Lungu faced hardships early in life, especially after his grandfather, a World War I hero, died. He was recognized for his intelligence and trained for reconnaissance missions. Lungu participated in the Western Front after Romania switched sides in 1944, gathering intelligence on Nazi positions. He was decorated with four war medals for his bravery. His life inspired two novels and he survived a Nazi concentration camp, reportedly saved by a Jewish woman. In his later years, he lived in a social apartment, receiving little recognition for his sacrifices.
