The first two modernized air defense systems from Rheinmetall for the Romanian Army failed acceptance tests and have not yet been delivered. Originally scheduled for delivery by April 15, 2026, the new estimated delivery date is September 2026. The Romanian Ministry of Defense has imposed penalties for the delay, and Rheinmetall has committed to replacing non-compliant subsystems. The contract, worth 328 million euros, involves upgrading four Oerlikon GDF 103 systems to enhance their capabilities against drones and other aerial threats. Currently, Romania relies on the MEROPS system for drone defense, while plans for additional anti-drone systems are underway through the SAFE program.
