The Gagauz People's Assembly declared the governor's position vacant following the conviction of Evghenia Guțul. Elections for the new governor may coincide with the parliamentary elections on November 15. Guțul was sentenced to seven years for illegal party financing and accepting funds from a criminal group. Her conviction automatically ended her mandate as head of the region, prompting the Assembly to take action. A new election process will now be initiated in Gagauzia.
