The study published in "The Lancet" highlights the health impacts of tobacco exposure across 204 countries from 1990 to 2023. Secondhand smoke contains higher concentrations of toxic compounds than the smoke inhaled by smokers. Despite progress in some regions, about 70% of the global population lacks comprehensive smoke-free laws. As of 2024, only 79 countries meet the highest smoke-free standards, covering 2.6 billion people. Additional measures are needed to further reduce tobacco exposure.
