France's nuclear energy production capacity has dropped by over 20% due to environmental constraints, marking a record for such outages. The country relies on nuclear power for about 70% of its electricity, and this year has seen disruptions from heatwaves and droughts. Thirteen of the 57 reactors were affected, with eight completely shut down and five operating at reduced capacity. The Gravelines plant, the largest in Western Europe, faced significant outages due to jellyfish clogging cooling pumps. Extreme heat and drought have also limited water availability for cooling, forcing EDF to reduce or halt production to protect the environment.
