French President Emmanuel Macron has requested the European Commission to delay the implementation of methane reporting rules for oil and gas importers, citing legal risks amid tightening energy supplies. The EU regulation aims to reduce methane emissions by 45% by 2030 and requires imported oil and gas to meet European emission monitoring standards by 2027. Macron's letter, sent on September 18, also calls for temporary easing of fuel quality standards to boost European kerosene and diesel production. Several EU member states, including Germany, have already sought delays or suspensions of these regulations. The European Commission is monitoring fuel market developments and is open to considering new measures if supply security issues arise.
