The 2026 Tour of Romania began with a historic first stage held entirely outside the country, starting in Chișinău and finishing in Ungheni. Radosław Frątczak from Poland won the stage, taking the yellow jersey as the overall leader. This edition marks the first time in 92 years that the tour has started outside Romania, showcasing a new regional perspective for the competition. The stage featured a fast-paced route of 160 kilometers, with high speeds and early attacks. Frątczak's victory was decided by a photo finish, followed closely by Liam Punnewaert and Alessio Menghini. The tour will continue in Romania with the next stage starting in Iași.
