The English Passage in Bucharest, located between Calea Victoriei and Academiei Street, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Originally a barren land known as 'La Caraulă', it became a significant marketplace and military stopover. In the mid-19th century, it was transformed into a covered pedestrian passage by businessman Grigore Eliade, inspired by Western European commercial passages. The passage served various purposes over the years, including a luxury brothel during the interwar period, before being nationalized in 1947. Today, while the entrance from Calea Victoriei has been renovated, the passage shows signs of advanced degradation and is at risk of seismic issues, prompting proposals for historical monument classification.
